Platform and Progressive Principles 2024

20 Platform 24 Statement of Progressive Principles and Platform.

The Revolutionary War was the first American war against the corporation. The British East India Company. The perception of monopoly and unfair trade practices drove the normally peaceful colonists to take action against The British East India Company, and eventually the King for granting it, a monopoly on all tea exported to the colonies, and exemption on the export tax.

As the rich grew richer during the Gilded Age, the poor grew poorer, spurring the call for reforms. Corporate titans amassed spectacular fortunes and engaged in the most conspicuous of consumption. Beneath this golden veneer, however, American society was tarnished by poverty and corruption, which caused this period of American history to be called the “Gilded Age”. This also led to the rise of the unions and labor movement. The original Rednecks were part of that history in America. Labor Unions became the ultimate expression of democracy in the work place, even without going all the way to the worker or community owned cooperatives

The tradition of Fighting Bob and Progressive ideals

Robert La Follete had an idea for a Progressive experiment called the Wisconsin Idea. It was the belief that efficient government should be controlled by voters rather than businesses and lobbyists, and that help from specialists in law, economics and the social and natural sciences would produce the most effective government possible.

Robert La Follette was a Progressive politician and governor of Wisconsin. He developed a fierce opposition to corporate power and political corruption as a young man. Affiliated with the Republican Party for almost his entire career, La Follette worked in Congress, as the governor of Wisconsin and in the U.S. Senate. His rousing oratory, support for progressive reforms and frequent clashes with party leaders earned him the nickname “Fighting Bob.”

Teddy Roosevelt and “F.D.R.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt, in a 20,000-word State of the Union message to Congress, called on lawmakers to curb the power of trusts.

“Great corporations exist only because they are created and safeguarded by our institutions,” the president declared. Therefore, he added, it is “our right and our duty to see that they work in harmony with these institutions.”

“There is a widespread conviction in the minds of the American people that the great corporations known as trusts are in certain of their features and tendencies hurtful to the general welfare,” Roosevelt wrote in his first message as president, following McKinley’s assassination.

And FDR on April 29, 1938 in an address to the Congress:

Unhappy events abroad have retaught us two simple truths about the liberty of a democratic people.

The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism—ownership of Government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.

The second truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if its business system does not provide employment and produce and distribute goods in such a way as to sustain an acceptable standard of living.

More Recent history and up until today?

My Mother was born the same year as Marten Luther King. 1929 was the beginning of the Great Depression. The racial issues are generally better in much of society, but rearing its ugly head again. Many of the problems with corporations and the economy that created the first Great Depression are still ongoing again today, just in a more exaggerated and pervasive way.

Churches and religious organizations, like many other charitable organizations, qualify for exemption from federal income tax under IRC Section 501(c)(3) and are generally eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. In exchange for this tax exempt status, the churches and some other religious organizations are to refrain from lobbying and partisan political influencing. This has gone out the window since the early 1980s in many cases. More so from the giant mega churches.

Since The election of Ronald Reagan at the beginning of the 1980s, Neoliberal Economics has transferred many trillions of dollars of wealth to the top one or two percent of corporations or the ultra rich. This is to the detriment of the people of Arkansas, the US and the world economy. All of this while destabilizing the health of our environment, of the living planet, and our worlds climate.

Thanks to the current lack of controls on corporations, Wall Street and the uncontrolled modern day Robber Barons, economic inequality is worse than The Gilded Age. Now with the “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision it has become much worse than before. This lack of controls also brought us “The Great Recession” of 2008. Now through Super-PACs and unlimited dark money in our elections and lobbying, we have little to no accountability. Many of these monopoly’s and corporate conglomerates are larger today than the economics of many states or even some countries.

And this is on top of the corrupting and perverse effects on the governments of our state, our country, and the devastating effect of many formerly stable democratic governments around the world. Many that are no longer considered our friendly allies.
