The American image took a hit with the federal indictment of Donald Trump over alleged mishandling of classified documents, making him the first former U.S. president to face federal criminal charges. The fact that Mr. Trump leads polls for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 makes his indictment all the more consequential. The implications for the future of American governance could be profound.
Still, Americans can take heart in the lessons of other democracies, as the Christian Science Monitor explained in a magazine cover story back in January. From France, Israel, and South Korea, to Argentina and Brazil, other nations have shown that former leaders can be held to account – even sent to prison – and the country survives.
No one is above the law. Some leaders, such as in Brazil, have served time in prison for corruption and then been reelected. Israel is another example: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced indictment, was voted out, and then returned to office. His trial is still ongoing.
Throughout American history many leaders have borrowed from the bible calling our nation a, “city upon a hill” and the hope for humanity… And a sense of pride in the American system and the world’s oldest still surviving democracy. Striving to create a more perfect union.
We are always trying to catch up with history. It is the process of creating a more perfect union. Improving upon a previous attempt , to convey an idea that the United States remains an unfinished work-in-progress and that …..Not to make it great again, but to keep forging forward in the direction of more just, more equality, to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. Something that our offspring, and our children’s children’s children will get to strive towards.
“in order to form a more perfect union.” The phrase nods to the ideology of, and is used rhetorically to convey an idea that the United States remains unfinished, and that achieving the lofty goals espoused by the American founding documents demands constant inputs of both reflection and labor by all good Americans.
In this sense “toward a more perfect union” is also not dissimilar to a “growth mindset” or an athlete’s training regimen, in which errors, flaws or crises are viewed as opportunities for reassessment and retraining.[3] A kind of community-oriented striving. The phrase “To secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” implies that there are also things that are not blessings about liberty. It is up to every one of us as a community, and all of us as individuals to donate to this continuing effort of making America more a perfect union. This country was established by we the people, if we desire to continue on the path, it is up to us. Life is a do it your self game, no one can do your part. Without you there is no we. Not Me, We.
